Big thanks to the guys at Forbidden Planet for selling me this kit. This article isn't sponsored, but the least I can do is hope that their prices don't get bumped up thousandfold because some anime embodiment of the Y2K bug gets unleashed upon the world thus necessitating the guy I'm about to build a model of to appear and stab him in the forehead.
Also, big shout-out to my colleague and old-school Digimon fan MasterTP10. There sadly isn't a Nami-esque Figure Rise model kit for Mimi, but all we can do in that regard is pray to the overlords at Bandai.
My past relationship with the Digimon franchise has been a little on and off, but generally a positive one. Adventure 01 is a classic, the movie is a confusing mess that feels like it was mashed together from several different movies (probably because that's exactly what happened), Tamers is one of my favourite Shonen anime of all time, the Adventure Cyber Sleuth games are fun in spite of the archaic savepoint mechanic and Hacker's Memory's perpetually-frowning protagonist, and I even recall having at least two of the digital pets that the franchise was originally meant to sell.
I also gave the reboot of Adventure 01 a shot, but the episodes I've seen thus far are a little too contemplative and overclimatic too early on for my taste. And part of the reason for that is the sudden end of the second episode appearance of the guy we're about to build today.
Oh, and much like with the God Gundam, I'm gonna be going with the original name rather than the dub name - it's the name the box uses, and "Omnimon" sounds too much like dated internet slang for eating something enthusiastically.
Although this one uses that same-old-same-old desk-hogging concertina-style manual that I grumbled about with the Byarlant Custom, I at least appreciate that I can finally go back to segmenting this build diary into headers as per the manual. Huzzah!
Head
Oh I see, the first thing I see is that the eye stickers are two individual tiny stickers. Greeeeeeeeeat...
At least the second thing I notice is the solid, glossy plastic we've got going on here. I don't know if this is usual for Figure Rise kits, since this is my first time with this line, but I like it.
Alright, I can at least confidently say that the eye stickers had enough length and surface area for me to manoeuvre them into place and smooth them out, so it's not as bad as the manual makes it look.
Well, it's simple, but I like it. Let's make something to stick it on top of.
Body
Be very careful when lining up the blue and white parts of the chest - you can probably see in this image that I misaligned the white part here and ended up snapping off two parts of it in trying to correct it. Nothing that my plastic glue can't fix and it isn't going to be noticeable in context (especially at a distance), but the manual does say to match the shapes up and slide them in rather than forcing them, so be careful of that if you decide to get this kit.
Well, that was eventful. Now it needs some MetalGreymon flavour to it.
Right Arm
Now that we've got some of that, let's throw in a dash of WarGreymon too.
Left Arm
I would've preferred to get WarGreymon's Figure Rise kit since I prefer the design of him to Omegamon, but this'll do for now. And hey - I didn't think I'd get my hands on the RG Sazabi until much later than when I eventually did, so never say never!
Looks nice, though I can see from later on that the actual blade of the Grey Sword is for latter.
Legs
It was around halfway through the first leg that I realised I missed the left shoulder plate. It's not a big process though, so let's do that before moving on to the waist.
Upper Body
Ooh, yes! Shiny stickers behind a transparent part! I love those!
Okey dokey, that's done now. Onto the last part to put it all together.
Waist
And now to finally assemble the whole thing...
The way the leg-hip joints are angled make the articulation a little weird, but other than that, I like the proportions we're getting here. But much like the Adventure 01 guidebook said about Myotismon, there's a certain something to add to make him look less skinny.
Cape
And to finish it all off, let's hook some weapons to this feller.
Garuru Cannon
You have to pull out the retracted cannon piece before attaching the full-length barrel.
Grey Sword
And now for the part I've really been looking forward to.
And with all that...
All in all, it's a passable kit, especially if you like yourself some Digimon. But some of the articulation doesn't really make much in the way of sense at a first glance with the angled leg joints and the particular way the arms twist, and there's of course the really delicate parts on the chest area. It's not a bad starting choice for my first foray into the Figure Rise line, but there's better out there. If only I could get my hands on the WarGreymon...
Stay safe and keep clipping, folks!
The Good
+ Colourful, I guess
+ The way the boundaries of the eye stickers are covered up by the outer parts makes it look interesting
The Bad
- Chest assembly is really fussy
- Sword stickers are ugly
- Articulation is not good, even for the basic standing pose
